Erice is an ancient hamlet that smells of musk and almond paste and it is surrounded by box shrubs and cyclamens. It features narrow cobblestoned streets and pretty flowered courtyards . 62 churches, characterised by imposing wooden front doors and carved facades, show their medieval origin. Founded by the Elymians, its pagan vocation can still be seen in the castle and in the fountain dedicated to Venus. Erice is often shrouded in clouds, perhaps retained by the crenellations of the “Balio”, the wide public garden surrounded by box shrubs where you can admire breathtaking views. On clear days the coast of North Africa and even the top of mount Etna can be seen.
The renowned archaeological site of Segesta is located near Calatafimi, among olive groves and pastures. It is characterised by the imposing temple that so fascinated Goethe during his journey in Sicily. Certainly it was built by the Elymians in the 5th b.C. , when this ancient people had already become heavily Hellenized. A little higher up is an amphitheatre (built after the temple, around the 3rd b.C.) with a natural setting of exceptional beauty, given by stunning views over the surrounding countryside and the gulf of Castellammare. In addition to its historical and cultural interest, the “Teatro di Segesta (Segesta Theater)” is frequented by numerous visitors attracted by concerts, shows and events, such as the famous theater performances that take place at dawn.
